Modern Warfare 4 Full Launch Day: Multiplayer Is Live Now, Game Pass Status, Download Size and Switch 2 Explained

If you played the campaign early access over the last week, the waiting is finally over: Modern Warfare 4's full launch lands Friday, October 23, 2026, and multiplayer — the piece of the game that was still locked — is already live. Infinity Ward opened the servers ahead of the scheduled window, so launch day arrived a little early this year.
Here's everything you need to know on launch day, in one place.
The short version
- Multiplayer is live NOW. Infinity Ward flipped the switch ahead of the planned unlock window, so it's already running worldwide.
- The planned schedule was a rolling midnight-local unlock on Oct 23. Console players were set to unlock at midnight local time; PC storefronts can differ — check your platform's countdown.
- Early access recap: campaign early access ran from Oct 16 and DMZ early access from Oct 20, both for digital pre-orders only. Physical-copy buyers unlock with everyone today.
- Not on Game Pass at launch — Activision says so officially (more below).
- Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam, Battle.net) launching at the same time as console, and Nintendo Switch 2 — Call of Duty's return to Nintendo hardware after more than a decade.
- Download size: Activision's official PC spec calls for 115 GB of free SSD space; reported sizes vary by platform.
Multiplayer went live early — so check first, read second
Infinity Ward announced the early opening with a simple message: it is go time. Instead of a strict midnight-local rollout, players were already in multiplayer matches on launch eve.
The practical advice: if you're reading this on launch day and the game isn't playable yet on your storefront, don't trust a third-party countdown over your own console or PC client — check your platform's store page, restart it, and check again. Server-status trackers are showing no active outage, so any stragglers are more likely unlock-timing quirks than a broken launch.
What unlocks at full launch vs what early access already had
- Oct 16: Campaign early access — a global simultaneous launch at 10 AM PT for digital pre-orders, as we covered in our early-access guide.
- Oct 20: DMZ early access — the extraction mode returns as MW4's third mode, with a new Hajin map and its own 70-level progression track. (No Zombies this time — that mode stays with Black Ops.)
- Oct 23 (today): Multiplayer for everyone — including everyone who bought a physical copy. Digital pre-orders got the early windows; physical buyers got no early access, but nobody's waiting anymore.

Preload and download size: start the download first
Preloads rolled out in stages all week to digital pre-orders: the campaign preload on Oct 14, the PC preload on Oct 15, the DMZ preload on Oct 18, and the full-game preload on Oct 21. Note that preload required a pre-order — if you're buying the game today at launch, you can't pre-download, so start the install the moment you can.
On size: don't state one number for every platform, because the reported figures differ. Activision's official PC spec lists 115 GB of free SSD space. Reported install ranges sit around 115–124 GB on PC, roughly 117–120 GB on PS5, a lighter 77–85 GB on Switch 2, and up to about 194 GB on Xbox Series X|S. Clear the room before you start, especially on Xbox.
The Switch 2 angle: CoD is back on Nintendo
Two things make MW4's platform lineup interesting beyond the usual PS5/Xbox/PC trio. First, this is Call of Duty's return to Nintendo hardware — the first CoD on a Nintendo console in more than a decade. Second, PC launches at the same time as console this year, with no separate later unlock on Steam or Battle.net.
There are no PS4 or Xbox One versions. PC players should also know the security requirements before launch night: online play requires TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot.

The Game Pass question, answered officially
This one is settled by Activision itself, not by rumor. In its October 15 launch blog, "Modern Warfare 4 Launches October 23 as a Standalone Release," Activision states plainly: MW4 "will not be included with Game Pass until Holiday 2027," and "to play the game at launch, players must purchase it separately." That's an official window with no exact date and no tier announced. If you want to play multiplayer today, you buy the game — $69.99 Standard or $99.99 Vault.
Launch-day notes: one known issue, good early signs
At 01:39 UTC on launch day, the official @CODUpdates account said it's investigating players being kicked while spectating in multiplayer. Infinity Ward's public issue board also lists matchmaking quality and stability as open items — normal day-one turbulence, and no wider outage is showing on status trackers.
On the brighter side: the campaign earned roughly 93% positive Steam ratings across about 4,500 reviews ahead of launch, with IGN's in-progress review at 8/10 — solid momentum heading into the full release.
FAQ
When does MW4 multiplayer unlock in my region? The planned schedule was midnight local time on October 23, rolling by region — and in practice, multiplayer opened early worldwide. If it isn't live on your storefront yet, check your platform's own countdown or restart your client.
Is Modern Warfare 4 on Game Pass? No — not at launch. Activision says officially it won't be included with Game Pass until Holiday 2027, so you need to buy it separately to play today.
Do physical-copy buyers get early access? No. Early access was for digital pre-orders only. Physical copies unlock alongside everyone else at full launch.
Is there a separate PC unlock time? No. PC launches at the same time as console this year — no later Steam or Battle.net unlock. Exact storefront hours can still differ, so check your platform's countdown.
Is there a Zombies mode in MW4? No. Zombies stays with Black Ops; MW4's third mode is DMZ, the extraction mode, which had its own early access from Oct 20.
How big is the download? Activision's official PC spec requires 115 GB of free SSD space. Reported ranges: 115–124 GB on PC, ~117–120 GB on PS5, ~77–85 GB on Switch 2, and up to ~194 GB on Xbox Series X|S.
