Final Fantasy Resonance Release Date, Price, Editions and Free Demo: Everything to Know Before Launch on October 22

The first HD-2D Final Fantasy launches October 22 for $49.99 — the free demo save carries over, Famitsu has scored it 36/40, and Switch buyers need to read the Switch 2 warning before they pay.

Final Fantasy Resonance launches tomorrow, Thursday, October 22, 2026, and it is a first for the series: the first Final Fantasy built in Square Enix's HD-2D style. It costs $49.99, a free demo covering the whole first chapter is live right now with save data that carries into the full game, and the first review — Famitsu's 36/40 — is already out. Here is everything worth knowing before you buy, including the one Nintendo catch that could cost you a second purchase if you pick the wrong version.

Release date and platforms

Final Fantasy Resonance releases on October 22, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store.

One PC note worth knowing: the live Steam page lists October 22, 2026 for North America and shows the game unlocking later in the day, not at midnight — Square Enix has not posted a confirmed Steam unlock hour, so check the countdown on the store page rather than planning a midnight session. Square Enix's Japanese listing shows October 23 for Steam, which lines up with the same worldwide unlock landing after midnight in Japan, not a separate delay.

The game is developed by Square Enix with co-developer Lancarse. It rebuilds the first story arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius as a full, premium, single-player RPG — the gacha and stamina systems are gone. You follow Rain and Lasswell, knights of the Kingdom of Grandshelt, and Fina, as they try to protect the world's crystals from Veritas of the Dark and the Sworn Six of Paladia.

Price and editions

There are three editions, priced in US dollars:

  • Standard Edition — $49.99: the base game. Physical packaged copies are available only on Switch, Switch 2 and PS5; other platforms are digital.
  • Digital Deluxe Edition — $59.99: the base game plus the Magitek & Grimoire Deluxe Pack (details below).
  • Collector's Edition — $209.99: sold exclusively through the Square Enix Store. It bundles the physical Standard game with a Digital Deluxe upgrade code, plus an acrylic block set, a pixel art book, a 120-track soundtrack CD set, and an exclusive Final Fantasy Trading Card Game promotional card.

For most players the Standard edition is the sensible buy — the Deluxe extras are early-game items and cosmetics, not story content.

The free demo — start today, keep your save

A free demo has been live since September 3, 2026 on every launch platform. It covers the opening through the end of Chapter 1 — roughly three to five hours — exactly as it appears in the full game, with some level restrictions.

Most importantly: your demo save data carries over to the full game. Play the demo today on the platform you plan to buy on, and you start launch day already past the first chapter. One warning that connects to the section below: play the demo on the exact Nintendo version you intend to buy, because Switch and Switch 2 saves do not move between versions.

How long is it, and what did the first review say?

Square Enix's own community Q&A on October 14 put the main story at approximately 30–40 hours, depending on playstyle, with plenty of optional content on top.

Famitsu's reviewers, who played the finished game, measured it a little shorter: about 20–30 hours for the main story and around 70 hours to see everything. Both numbers are worth knowing — plan on a focused JRPG, not an 80-hour epic, with a lot of optional hunting if you want it.

That Famitsu review is also the first score out: 36/40, with 9/9/9/9 from its four reviewers. That is a strong first signal. Western and English-language reviews had not been published at the time of writing and there is no verified Metascore yet, so treat Famitsu as an early indicator, not a final consensus — and be wary of roundup scores you cannot find on the outlet's own site.

Combat and Visions in brief

Battles are turn-based, built around a stagger system: exploit an enemy's weaknesses to fill its stagger gauge, break its defences, seize extra turns, and finish with cinematic Resonance attacks. There is no ATB gauge to race against.

Your party is bolstered by Visions — echoes of legendary Final Fantasy characters who fight alongside you with unique skills. Confirmed appearances include Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light, alongside the series staples you would expect: chocobos, espers, airships and moogles. Optional side content includes the wandering swordmaster Gilgamesh, a Colosseum, the Chamber of Arms, and a showdown with Ultima Weapon.

Warning for Switch buyers: Switch and Switch 2 are fully separate

Read this before you buy on Nintendo hardware. The Switch and Switch 2 versions of Final Fantasy Resonance are completely separate purchases.

  • There is no upgrade path from the Switch version to the Switch 2 version — no upgrade pack is planned.
  • Save data does not transfer between them, in either direction. Your demo save included.

So buy — and play the demo — on the console you actually plan to finish the game on. Picking the Switch version today and expecting to carry it over to Switch 2 later will mean buying the game again and starting over.

PC requirements: Windows 11 only

The live Steam page lists Windows 11 (64-bit) in both the minimum and recommended tiers — Windows 10 is not listed. Beyond that, the requirements are light:

  • Minimum (1080p, 30 FPS, Low): Ryzen 3 2300X / Core i3-8100, 8 GB RAM, Radeon RX 6400 / Arc A580 / GeForce GTX 1650, DirectX 12, 15 GB storage.
  • Recommended (1080p, 60 FPS, Highest): Ryzen 5 2500X / Core i3-8100, 8 GB RAM, Radeon RX 5500 XT / Arc A580 / GeForce GTX 1650, DirectX 12, 15 GB storage.

The Steam page also discloses Denuvo Anti-tamper DRM.

Pre-order bonus and Digital Deluxe contents

Pre-ordering any edition gets you the Magitek Airship & Squire Starter Pack: a Magitek Airship Passkey that reskins your airship, the Knight's Greatsword, the Chestplate of Preparation (boosts EXP earned in battle), a Magicite Shard, 3 Tents and 3 Mist Potions. Items are claimed from the postbox in front of the inn in the Town of Mitra after a certain point in the story.

The Digital Deluxe's Magitek & Grimoire Pack adds: a Magitek Armor Key that reskins your chocobo, the Archwitch's Grimoire (unlocks a character's Fel Meteor Limit Burst), a Mastery Ring, and consumables — 5 Tents, 5 Mist Potions, 5 Mist Ethers, 5 Phoenix Downs and 3 Remedies.

Missed the pre-order? On Steam, purchases made by November 6, 2026 at 8:59 a.m. PT still get the early-purchase Squire Kickstart Pack: a Blessed Cuirass (boosts gil earned) and a Mist Ether, claimed from the same Mitra postbox.

Is there a Final Fantasy Resonance demo?

Yes. The free demo is out now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, Switch 2 and PC. It covers the whole of Chapter 1, roughly three to five hours.

Does the demo save carry over?

Yes. Save data from the demo carries into the full game — but only on the same platform and, on Nintendo, the same version. Switch and Switch 2 saves do not transfer between each other.

How much does Final Fantasy Resonance cost?

$49.99 for the Standard Edition, $59.99 for the Digital Deluxe Edition, and $209.99 for the Square Enix Store-exclusive Collector's Edition.

How long is Final Fantasy Resonance?

Square Enix says the main story takes about 30–40 hours. Famitsu's reviewers measured 20–30 hours for the story and around 70 hours for everything.
