Minecraft is finally native on Nintendo Switch 2. After months of running on the new console through backward compatibility, Mojang's blockbuster sandbox gets a version built for Switch 2 hardware, and it is out today, Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
The headline is not just the prettier graphics. It is the price — or, for a large chunk of existing players, the lack of one. If you own Minecraft digitally on the original Switch, the Switch 2 Standard Edition is free to claim through the Nintendo eShop until January 31, 2027. If you own it on a cartridge, there is no free upgrade announced. That split, plus a January deadline that is easy to miss, is the whole story of this launch. Here is everything to know before you buy — or claim — anything.
Minecraft Switch 2 release date and price
Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 launches October 27, 2026, on the Nintendo eShop and at retail as a Game-Key Card. For players who do not qualify for the free upgrade, the US eShop prices are:
- Standard Edition — $29.99
- Deluxe Collection — $39.99
- Ultimate Collection — $49.99 The game is roughly a 1.5 GB download on Switch 2, according to Nintendo's store listing. It is a native Switch 2 build, not the old Switch version running in compatibility mode — which is why the upgrade path exists in the first place, and why the old version's owners cannot simply patch their way to the new one.
How to claim the free Switch 2 upgrade
This is the part most existing players care about, and the rules are specific. Mojang's own announcement, published on minecraft.net on October 7, lays them out plainly:
- Sign in with the Nintendo Account that owns the digital Switch version. The offer is tied to the purchasing account, not to a profile that merely played the game.
- Open the Nintendo eShop and find Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 — the new Switch 2 listing, not the original Switch listing.
- Select the Standard Edition. If your account qualifies, it should show as free. Do not complete a $29.99 checkout and hope for a refund later — check that the free offer is applied first.
- Complete the claim before January 31, 2027. Owning the original game is not enough on its own; the Switch 2 offer itself has to be redeemed through the eShop inside the window. The offer is available only through the Nintendo eShop, and only for the digital Standard Edition. Digital owners who would rather have the bigger bundles can instead put their entitlement toward the Deluxe Collection or Ultimate Collection at a discounted upgrade fee — Mojang has not published the exact discounted prices, so check what the eShop shows for your account before paying.

Who gets it free — and who doesn't
Free: You own a digital copy of Minecraft for the original Nintendo Switch, in most territories, and you claim the Switch 2 Standard Edition through the eShop by January 31, 2027. Not free, but a token fee: Japan, Taiwan and Thailand are the exceptions Mojang names in its fine print. There the upgrade costs 100 JPY in Japan, 30 NTD in Taiwan and 25 THB in Thailand, rather than being free. No free upgrade announced: You own Minecraft on a physical Switch cartridge. Mojang's announcement covers digital owners only, and Nintendo's own store notice repeats the same scope: "Already own a digital version of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch? Get a digital Minecraft Standard Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 for free." Nothing equivalent has been announced for cartridge owners, who would need to buy the Switch 2 edition at full price. If you are a cartridge household, check the eShop listing for your account before assuming anything — and do not buy the Standard Edition at $29.99 expecting a free upgrade to be applied afterwards.
Which edition should you buy?
Every edition includes the full game, Vibrant Visuals and the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack. The bigger bundles only add Marketplace extras, not extra game content, so for most players Standard is the right call — and for qualifying digital owners, it is free. Standard Edition | $29.99 (free for qualifying digital owners) | The game, Vibrant Visuals, Super Mario Mash-Up Pack Deluxe Collection | $39.99 | Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs and Plenty O'Blocks add-ons; 3 exclusive Character Creator items; 700 Minecoins Ultimate Collection | $49.99 | All Deluxe extras plus Decocraft and Weapons + Tools add-ons; 5 exclusive Character Creator items; 1,000 Minecoins One catch worth knowing before you pay for a bigger bundle: Minecoins included with these editions — and any Minecoins bought inside Minecraft on a Nintendo device — can only be spent inside the Nintendo ecosystem. They will not help you on Xbox, PlayStation or mobile.
What's actually new on Switch 2
Vibrant Visuals, on by default. This is Minecraft's biggest official graphics overhaul, first released in June 2025, and it is the default look on Switch 2: directional lighting, volumetric fog, shadows that move as the sun crosses the sky, and water that actually reflects. Supported Marketplace content gets the same treatment. There is a limit Mojang states in its own disclaimer: Vibrant Visuals is not available in some gameplay, including split-screen and when using certain Marketplace worlds and content. The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, refreshed. Exclusive to Nintendo versions of Minecraft, the pack is included in every Switch 2 edition and has been updated for Vibrant Visuals. It brings a Mario-themed world to explore — Peach's castle, Delfino Plaza and the rest — plus 15 music tracks and 40 player skins inspired by the Super Mario series. Your worlds carry over. Worlds and save data from the original Switch version can be carried over to the Switch 2 version, so an existing build does not have to be abandoned to make the jump. Playing together. Split-screen play on the couch is in, and cross-platform play is supported — but cross-platform play requires a Microsoft Account, and online multiplayer on Switch 2 requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership, sold separately.

The physical edition, explained
At retail, Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 is sold as a Game-Key Card, not a traditional cartridge with the full game on it. That means the card in the box downloads the game rather than containing it, so a fast connection and storage space matter more than the box suggests. It is the same game and the same editions as the eShop versions — just a retail route to the same download.
FAQ
Is Minecraft for Switch 2 free if I already own it on Switch? Only if you own the digital version on the original Switch, and only the Standard Edition, claimed through the Nintendo eShop by January 31, 2027. Cartridge owners have no free upgrade announced. How much does Minecraft Switch 2 cost? $29.99 for Standard, $39.99 for Deluxe Collection and $49.99 for Ultimate Collection on the US eShop, for players who do not qualify for the free upgrade. When does the free upgrade offer end? January 31, 2027, per Nintendo's store notice and the eShop listing. After that, qualifying owners would pay full price. Do my Switch worlds transfer to Switch 2? Yes. Nintendo lists carry-over of Nintendo Switch worlds as a feature of the Switch 2 version. Does the Switch 2 version include the Mario Mash-Up Pack? Yes — every edition includes the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack with Vibrant Visuals enabled. Is Vibrant Visuals available in every mode? No. Mojang's disclaimer says it is not available in some gameplay, including split-screen and certain Marketplace worlds and content.
The bottom line
For digital Switch owners, this is a free upgrade with a deadline — claim the Standard Edition before January 31, 2027, and there is no reason to pay. For everyone else, Standard at $29.99 is the sensible buy, with Deluxe and Ultimate only worth it if you actually want the add-ons and Minecoins inside them. And for cartridge owners, the honest answer is the least satisfying one: no free path has been announced, so check your eShop listing before spending anything.
