Star Wars Battlefront 3 Is Reportedly in the Works — But Two Insiders Are Telling Different Stories

A Variety report says EA's DICE and Respawn are building Star Wars Battlefront 3 — but another insider says Lucasfilm is still shopping the project around, with DICE and Bungie as candidates. EA, Disney, and Lucasfilm have confirmed nothing. Here's what each report says — and why they clash.

Star Wars Battlefront 3 is back in the headlines — and, as always with this game, the headlines disagree with each other. Within days in October 2026, two separate insider accounts described the long-awaited sequel in ways that can't both be true: one says it's already in development at EA, the other says it's still looking for a developer. EA, Disney, and Lucasfilm have confirmed neither version.

That conflict is the story. Battlefront 3 is one of gaming's most requested sequels, and every few years a new report sends fans into a frenzy before fading away. This time the reporting is more specific — and more contradictory — than usual. Here is every claim, sourced, and what is actually confirmed versus what is rumor.

The report: DICE and Respawn are building it

The strongest version of the story comes from Variety, as reported by Screen Rant on October 21, 2026: EA will bring together Respawn Entertainment and DICE to build Star Wars Battlefront 3, with multiple sources confirming the project's identity.

The chain of evidence matters, because it's thinner than the headline suggests. EA publicly confirmed that Respawn and DICE are collaborating on an unnamed future project. Variety, citing multiple sources, identifies that mystery project as Battlefront 3. EA itself has not named the project, and neither EA nor Lucasfilm has confirmed a Battlefront 3 is in development.

What makes this version plausible is the studios' track records: DICE built the rebooted Battlefront titles (2015 and 2017) and leads EA's Battlefield work, while Respawn built the Star Wars Jedi games. A DICE-plus-Respawn Battlefront would pair the series' original reboot studio with EA's most successful modern Star Wars team.

The counter-report: Lucasfilm is still shopping it around

Days earlier, a different account pointed the other way. Giant Bomb journalist Jeff Grubb described a situation in which Lucasfilm is looking for a developer for a new Battlefront game, with DICE and Bungie — the Sony-owned studio behind Destiny and Marathon — named as candidates. That points to early talks, not a game in production, and Grubb does not mention Respawn at all.

Separately, Bulkhead Games CEO Joe Brammer claimed on X on October 19, 2026 that DICE and Respawn are working on Battlefront 3 together, while noting he was unsure what that means for the future of Battlefield. Brammer does not work at any of the studios involved and did not say how he knows this.

So the two accounts collide directly: if Lucasfilm is still choosing between DICE and Bungie, the game cannot already be in production at DICE and Respawn. If DICE and Respawn are already building it, Lucasfilm is not still shopping it. One of these pictures is wrong, outdated, or describing a different stage of the same process — and no official statement resolves it yet.

Why fans want this so badly

The hunger for Battlefront 3 is not nostalgia alone. The rebooted Battlefront II launched in 2017 to widespread backlash over aggressive monetization and loot boxes — the game initially required roughly 40 hours of play to unlock a single hero before microtransactions were stripped out following the backlash. DICE spent years fixing it, and the game grew its fanbase back, with a genuine resurgence in player counts on Steam throughout 2025 keeping interest in a third installment alive.

Meanwhile, neither the original Battlefront series nor the rebooted one ever made it past two games. A third entry would be, for both iterations of the franchise, a first. Former developers have said publicly that many colleagues from the 2017 game would be interested in returning for a new entry.

The capacity problem: who would actually build it?

Even the optimistic version of this story has a staffing problem. DICE is busy with steady content for Battlefield 6 under the larger Battlefield Studios umbrella. Respawn splits its time between Apex Legends and the next Star Wars Jedi game, which EA has confirmed is in development but not officially unveiled. EA is also reportedly cutting costs, which makes staffing a second large shooter harder — and the report lands during a turbulent period for EA, following its purchase in a deal involving Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and a private equity firm, and the closure of BioWare.

If Bungie were the studio, the problem looks different but no smaller: a Sony-owned studio building a Lucasfilm game for EA's old franchise would be an unusual arrangement, and Grubb's own reporting notes Bungie would likely have to put other plans on hold.

None of this makes Battlefront 3 impossible. It makes "already in full production" harder to square with what every named studio is publicly doing right now.

What is confirmed, what is rumor

Confirmed: EA has said publicly that Respawn and DICE will collaborate on an unnamed future project. A new Star Wars Jedi game is in development at Respawn. Battlefield 6 content continues at DICE.

Reported, not confirmed: That the unnamed Respawn-DICE project is Star Wars Battlefront 3 (Variety, via multiple sources). That Lucasfilm is in talks with DICE and Bungie (Grubb / Bespin Bulletin reporting). That DICE and Respawn are working on Battlefront 3 (Brammer, via X).

Not confirmed by anyone official: A Battlefront 3 title, platform list, release window, or team assignment. No Lucasfilm Games, EA, DICE, Bungie, or Disney announcement confirms a Battlefront 3 project is in development.

What to watch next

The fastest way this resolves is also the most boring: an official statement. EA or Lucasfilm naming the Respawn-DICE project would either confirm Battlefront 3 or kill this round of rumors outright. A second signal would be staffing — Battlefront veterans publicly joining a project, or DICE/Respawn job listings pointing at large-scale multiplayer Star Wars work. Until one of those appears, treat every Battlefront 3 headline, including this one, as an attributed report, not an announcement.

And if you want the honest fan take: Battlefront 3 has been "reportedly in the works" before, and it has always needed an official announcement to become real. This round has better sourcing than most — Variety with multiple sources is not nothing — but it also has a direct contradiction from another credible insider. That's not a confirmation. That's a rumor with competition.

FAQ

Is Star Wars Battlefront 3 confirmed? No. EA, Disney, and Lucasfilm have not confirmed a Battlefront 3. What exists is reporting: Variety says DICE and Respawn are building it, while another report says Lucasfilm is still looking for a developer.

Who would make Battlefront 3? Depends on which report you believe: DICE with Respawn (Variety / Brammer), or DICE or Bungie as candidates in early talks (Grubb). DICE built the rebooted Battlefront games; Respawn built Star Wars Jedi; Bungie built Destiny.

When would Battlefront 3 come out? No release window has been reported credibly, let alone confirmed. Both named studios are busy with Battlefield 6, Apex Legends, and the next Jedi game.

Why did Battlefront II get a second chance from fans? Its 2017 launch was defined by loot-box backlash, but years of fixes rebuilt its player base, with a Steam resurgence through 2025 — which is a large part of why demand for a sequel is so loud now.

The bottom line

Battlefront 3 is not announced. It is reported — by good sources, in conflicting ways, around a real EA collaboration that EA has not named. That's enough to be excited about, and exactly enough to stay skeptical about. The moment EA or Lucasfilm puts a name to the project, this story changes completely. Until then, enjoy the rumor, but don't pre-order anything: there is nothing to pre-order.

DICE and Respawn, or DICE and Bungie — which team do you trust with it?

Log Battlefront II, rate the comeback, and make your case for the sequel that hasn't been announced yet.
